Introductions thread

Tell us a bit about yourself below :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ll go first.

[The federal prosecutor] can have citizens investigated…to the tune of public statements and veiled or unveiled intimations. Or the prosecutor may choose a more subtle course and simply have a citizen’s friends interviewed…Therein is the most dangerous power of the prosecutor:…In such a case, it is not a question of discovering the commission of a crime and then looking for the man who has committed it, it is a question of picking the man and then searching the law books, or putting investigators to work, to pin some offense on him…[T]he real crime becomes that of being unpopular with the predominant or governing group, being attached to the wrong political views, or being personally obnoxious to or in the way of the prosecutor himself.

Attorney General Robert Jackson (1940)

Thanks to the high-profile nature of this case, the public has access to much more information than usual about the different sides of the story. As a European, I’ve found FTX to be an eye-opening case study of the integrity of the US media and justice system. Not that my country necessarily does any better; in fact in a sense, this is what good looks like. If it’s this easy for the “Land of the Free” to imprison some of its (in some ways) most privileged citizens based on apparently unfounded allegations about a non-US company, I dread to think how vulnerable the rest of us are.

I created this forum because it felt like there was enough momentum to start opening various private discussions to the public. I’ve spoken to dozens of people offline who are sympathetic to the idea that Sam, Caroline, Gary, Nishad, and Ryan are innocent of the crimes of which they’ve been convicted, and I want to connect with more people who’ve been having that conversation and invite others to join.

I think the true telling of what happened to FTX has barely begun. With growing domestic bipartisan support for criminal justice reform, I remain hopeful that justice may yet prevail in this case.
