Guidelines for community discourse

Note: These are not hard and fast rules. They are guidelines to aid the human judgment of our community in keeping this a civilized place for public discourse. As a general rule of thumb, please treat this discussion forum with the same respect you would a public park. :deciduous_tree:

Stay kind and constructive

Always aim to add something constructive to the discussion, however small. If you are not sure if your post improves the conversation, think over what you want to say and try again later.

You may wish to respond by disagreeing. That’s fine. But focus on criticizing ideas not people and try to avoid knee-jerk contradiction in your responses.

Respect the focus of this site. If you’re insistent that what happened to FTX was “Sam and his accomplices stole $8 billion”, there are plenty of spaces on the internet for you. This is not one of them.

Remember that on this forum it is not okay to kick people while they’re down, even if you think that in some sense you’re punching up.

And in case it needs saying:

  • Don’t post anything that a reasonable person would consider abusive or hate speech
  • Don’t post anything obscene or sexually explicit
  • Don’t harass or grief anyone, impersonate people, or expose their private information
  • Don’t post spam or otherwise vandalize the forum

These are not concrete terms with precise definitions—aim to avoid even the appearance of any of these things. If you’re unsure, ask yourself how you would feel if your post was featured on the front page of a major news site. This is a public forum, and search engines index these discussions.

Encourage the good stuff; flag the bad

The conversations we have here set the tone for every new arrival. Please join productive discussions and Like :+1: helpful comments!

When you see bad behavior, it’s often best not to reply and it’s rarely worth giving them the attention and energy of an extensive back-and-forth. If your account has flagging abilities, you can flag :triangular_flag_on_post: harmful content; if enough flags accrue, action will be taken, either automatically or by moderator intervention. Otherwise, you can let us know via private message.

In order to maintain a healthy community, moderators reserve the right to remove any content and any user account for any reason at any time. Moderators do not preview new posts; the moderators and site operators take no responsibility for any content posted by the community.

Keep it tidy

Please help us to keep this forum easy to navigate by putting things in a sensible place:

  • Don’t start a topic in an unrelated category
  • Don’t cross-post the same thing in multiple topics
  • Don’t divert a topic by changing it midstream
  • Rather than posting “Agreed” or “Great!” as a separate comment, you can use the Like :+1: button

Only post your own content

You may not post anything digital that belongs to someone else without permission. You may not post descriptions of, links to, or methods for stealing someone’s intellectual property (software, video, audio, images), or for breaking any other law.
